Chef’s Note: L’Chaim! Happy Hanukkah!
Spring rolls, hot and sour soup, fried rice, and ginger chicken – for many Jewish families in Canada and the U.S., these are the some of the classic Chinese restaurant dishes they’ll share with friends and family on Christmas Day. There’s a longstanding tradition of Jewish families in Canada and the U.S. going out to eat Chinese food on Dec. 25. The custom dates back to at least 1935, when the New York Times mentioned a Chinese restaurant owner bringing chow mein to a New Jersey Jewish children’s home on Christmas Day.
I’m not Jewish, but the holidays weren’t always the family events the tv specials make them out to be. There were many Christmas Eves spent alone playing Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo, eating take out combo for 1 (c) from Hong Kong Gardens, and reading Steven King books. At midnight the local channel would play The Sound of Music, and on CBC there would be a selection of short videos like The Snowman. I used to drink eggnog, but as I got older the sugar got to be too much for me.
