Chef’s Note: “As American as apple pie” is a phrase many are familiar with. And many are probably also familiar with the ironic fact that neither apples nor pie are indigenous to North America.
But it is not really so ironic – there are many stories that make up the USA, and the story of immigrants bringing the best of their homelands here is an essential and important one.
The potent and enduring connection between apples and America is given a nice nod here as “handsome” Steve has already caught the waitress’ eye. She even notices his “cool shirt”. But it is not until he orders apple pie that she recognizes who he is.
Chef’s Note: Happy National Apple Pie Day!
“Pie is the food of the heroic. No pie-eating people can be permanently vanquished.” —New York Times, May 3rd, 1902
