Chef’s Note: While it is true that Selina has enough charms on her own to lure and seduce I think the main reason her sultry invitation to an intimate candlelit dinner fails here is that there is, in fact, no dinner!
Where’s the food? Is it being delivered by some helpful henchmen? Still in the oven? Sitting just off scene in a purloined chafing dish? I think that’s why it takes Batman a moment to ask “You want me to join you for dinner?” – as a detective he’s trained to always trust the evidence and there’s no evidence of an actual dinner here. There’s not even a bottle of wine or water carafe on the table?
In fact, I think he’s throwing some subtle shade there at the end: “Enjoy your meal.”*
Seriously, Selina, maybe serve up a nice burrito with cilantro next time? Or a tasty burger (since you have the proper flatware available)? Or a nice bowl of soup?
Pretty much anything other than sadly empty plates and wineglasses.**
* Look at that smirk!
** The one exception here being pie, of course.
