Chef’s Note: It’s the first non-superhero post of this project as well as the first cannibalism post. Not sure what to make of that coincidence. What I do know is that if I had to have human meat, I would definitely prefer for it to not be Nazi Skinhead flavor – blech.
Chef’s Note: Yes, Jamestown Cervelle was a real thing, mostly. Same for the Tonsil Canapé, unfortunately quite very. Again with the blech.
Chef’s Note: For the recipe record, the sammich here was presented as “Slices of Polish baked ham and Tillamook vintage cheddar on five-seed and Alpine herb bread from Brooklyn, lubricated with coastal grass-fed butter.” Now that… that I would not say blech to.
The word “cannibalism” itself comes from the name that the Spanish gave to the Caribs (Caníbales). The Spanish accused the Caribbean tribe of ritualistically eating their enemies, but modern-day scholars have doubts that it actually happened. Because the Caribs were engaged in an anti-colonial battle with a host of European powers, many historians now argue that the cannibalism rumors were just a propaganda tactic by the Spanish meant to stir up fears.
