Chef’s Note: There’s a lot going on here for Virgil and his family, as well as for his larger neighborhood and community.
That said, what is obviously most important in these scenes is the fact that Virgil’s father, Robert, apparently puts V8 vegetable juice on his morning cereal. And moreover, does so casually – no one at the table bats so much as an eyelash at this extraordinary event.
Will the culinary inventiveness of homo sapiens ever cease? I have come across peoples who use orange juice, and apple juice, as an alternate lubricant for their dry cereal. But V8? I cannot find a single instance on record.
If anyone out there can provide sources for such, please do contact me.
I know much is made of the cloud of mutant purple tear gas that supposedly gave Virgil his superpowers, but I believe we may have found a much more likely candidate right here.
So, the team developed a microbial electrochemical cell that can exploit tomato waste to generate electric current. Shrestha explains, “Microbial electrochemical cells use bacteria to break down and oxidize organic material in defective tomatoes.”
The oxidation process, triggered by the bacteria interacting with tomato waste, releases electrons that are captured in the fuel cell and become a source of electricity. The natural lycopene pigment in tomatoes, the researchers have found, is an excellent mediator to encourage the generation of electrical charges from the damaged fruits.
Right? Right??
