Chef’s Note: Elijah Snow is one prickly old man (emphasis on “prick”). And while this is evident from his first hostile response to Jakita, I think it is even more firmly established by his request to have her served coffee he just described as tasting like “a dog took a leak in it.” It’s just, shall we say, particularly cold-blooded.
Food offered with hospitality is a powerful thing. So is food offered with malice.
Chef’s Note: Most people would prefer their coffee free of urine, canine or otherwise. There are those, however, who enjoy a little poop in their brew.* It’s true. Unlike comic books, you can’t make this shit up.**
Kopi luwak is a coffee that consists of partially digested coffee cherries, which have been eaten and defecated by the Asian palm civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus). It is therefore also called civet coffee. The cherries are fermented as they pass through a civet’s intestines, and after being defecated with other fecal matter, they are collected.
