Chef’s Note: Ah, the ever-enduring appeal of the bake sale – in the world of food it is second only to the lemonade stand in terms of entrepreneurship for the pure hearted.
Chef’s Note: It’s hard to imagine what kind of cookie recipe could fail so miserably missing just one ingredient. Of course, the notion of a secret ingredient is a dramatic one – that single magic element which will make all the difference.
What then could this mysterious rare & spicy herb from Argentina be? Chimichurri is the national sauce of Argentina, but the herbs for that are pretty standard ( parsley, garlic, oregano, etc) and none are unique to the country.
What is (relatively) unique to Argentina, and would have been even moreso back in 1967, is maté – the national beverage. It is made from the herb yerba mate, which can also be used to make very delicious cookies.
That would be my best guess. Then again, the blushing Mr. Tolliver later turns out to be a [SPOILERS] dastardly villain, so it’s quite possible he just made it all up.
