Chef’s Note: I have always loved this scene from DMZ.
Here we have Mr. “I-never-meant-to-be-an-embedded-journalist” Matty Roth being shown around the war-torn DMZ by the eminently capable and very street-smart Zee Hernandez. And where does she bring him first to show him what’s going in the DMZ?
A restaurant. In this case, the most impressive and enjoyable Top Rest Aurant.
Because, after all, what is a more direct way of showing a person that one’s surroundings are, indeed, civil and civilized? By showing them a place where everyone sits down and breaks bread together, above & apart from the war and chaos of everyday life – just like regular people.
Chef’s Note: So, what do they get for lunch? Zee seems to be eating the mother of all sammichs – look at the size of that thing! Not sure if it’s a burger of some sort (beef or veggie?) or just a huge hank of veggies on a massive sesame seed bun. Definitely has some kind of special sauce dripping out.
As for what’s put down in front of Matty? I’m going to go with deep-fried tofu. That’s the only thing that really makes sense, no? I can’t think of anything else that would be represented as golden & steaming squares of deliciousness. And, y’know, chopsticks.
