Chef’s Note: For those unfamilar with Conan, he is often thought to be not very sophisticated or smart, given his rough and barbarian ways. But here we see the serious wile and wits he possesses when confronting powerful men with large egos.
I’m not afraid. I’m insulted.
Conan immediately drops a baller move here. He challenges Victor in terms of hospitality, which as a proud monarch is of paramount importance to Victor.
He then follows it up immediately by challenging Victor’s vanity, which is also very much an element at play here.
But when Victor finally reveals his damaged face, Conan simply pushes the meal in Victor’s direction – once again, emphasizing the notion that eating together as equals will see this deal through.
And Victor takes the cue, so Conan gets back to the business at hand.
Ultimately, I doubt Conan was much moved by whatever facial wounds he might have witnessed. He certainly has seen, and done, much worse.
Chef’s Note: Really not sure as to what they are eating here…? Wines, mashed potatoes, rolls, maybe a pumpkin(?) as well?
I’m assuming turkey given the size of the roast, but for all I know Victor may have game reserves of all manner of exotic large fowl on his castle grounds.
I will note that he does deliver in terms of all the standard requirements of a kingly feast. There’s the chandelier, the long linen-draped table, a wide variety of sides, elegantly folded napkins, etcetera…
All of which Conan completely ignores ;)︎
