Batman Returns (1992)
Written by Daniel Waters & Sam Hamm
Directed by Tim Burton
Starring (in this scene): Micheal Keaton as Bruce Wayne, Michael Gough as Alfred Pennyworth
Chef’s Note: Yes, it’s yet another scene of Batman supping soup!
This particular moment shows just how completely Bruce trusts Alfred – when he first takes a sip, he immediately spits it out in confusion and disgust. When Alfred succinctly informs him that this particular kind of soup is meant to be served cold, Bruce goes right back to supping without so much as a blink or pause.
Now that we have so many examples, I think we can safely draw the conclusion that the reason that Batman likes soup is because it is always Alfred serving it to him.
Chef’s Note: Happy National Vichyssoise Day!
Soup is in a really sweet spot for batman. It’s liquid, so it goes down fast, hydrates, and digests easy. It doesn’t provide much bulk, but it does provide a serious punch of nutrients and warmth. The utility belt probably has a canteen or three, and it’d be easy to hold it in a thermos in the various bat-vehicles too.
Plus, you can beat Mr. Freeze with it! https://youtube.com/shorts/fpsqgmDIJe8?si=QkiEYbrKxIFq5e70
Thank you for your insightful comment, Quail! I had not previously considered it, but I now agree that one of those containers on Batman’s utility belt is most likely a canteen full of piping hot soup. It just makes sense.
Thank you too for that video – informative and hilarious!
