Chef’s Note: “Finest selection of Japanese ales and rice wines in the city” – so where is Logan supping and sipping? Earlier, we have seen that the city here is NYC, so there might be a bit of competition as to who has the best selection, but we have a nice exterior shot to aid us in our restaurant identification.
There does not seem to be a name more than the marquee sign suggests, so we will have to go with that: Sushi Bar. Still such straightforward naming strategies are more than common in the restaurant world – at least you know what you’re getting, even if you can’t read the menu.
More importantly, one of the street signs out front is clearly visible, and it’s not only a real street, it’s one of the more definitive ones in all Manhattan: Thompson Street
Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any establishment called “Sushi Bar” along Thompson Street, though there are more than a few sushi bars. Still, when you see what those places look like, it is clear none are a good match for Logan’s joint – most are far fancier, with little in the way of grimy countertops or conspicuously absent waitstaff.
We should probably also take into account the time period of this scene, which is 14 years ago or so. Many a restaurant has come and gone in that time. Still, you’d think that a place stocking the best selection of Japanese ales and rice wines would stand the test of time.
What then are we to make of this confusing situation? There is always the possibility that this unassuming sushi bar does indeed have the best selection, but is only known by a select few. The idea of an underground restaurant is always an enticing one: “I know a place…”
All in all, however, given the complete lack of any direct evidence that this place is what Noh-Varr says it is, it seems more likely that whoever told Noh-Varr about it was simply lying and knew Logan would be there. It’s not like Noh-Varr is a helluva detective or anything.
