Chef’s Note: Given their location, I first assumed that Diana and her friends are getting drunk on Rượu cần, the traditional rice wine of Vietnam. But I do not see the earthenware jars that it is usually fermented in and drunk from.
Then again, they are in a war zone, so there’s no reason to assume such domestic traditions are able to be practiced or maintained. What then is more likely is that this wine and other supplies are liberated goods, spoils of war. So, let’s take a good look at the bottle Diana is holding aloft in triumph-
The weave work around the bottle initially makes me think of a fiasco.
Maybe then it’s a bottle of Italian wine? Still… that weave work seems a lot more ornate and fancy than simple straw/raffia. And really, given the location, French wine would be much more likely.
I’m stumped! Someone with more extensive bottle knowledge than I shall have to chime in here.
Update: It has been noted that rượu rắn, i.e. snake alcohol, often comes in ornate bottles-
Maybe? Certainly seems like something a warrior might drink.
Chef’s Note: Happy National Drink Wine Day!
