Chef’s Note: This was an inspired bit of deception on Jessica’s part. Shellfish poisoning is so well-known that even an interdimensional god such as Morlun is familiar with it, as is evidenced by his immediate offer of aid.
No matter how delightful and finger-licking a shrimp platter might be, every shellfish lover comes across a bad shrimp every now and then. That one bad shrimp can turn your stomach into a rebellion trying to get rid of the spoiled food. This is why you will experience grumbles and cramps leading to fatigue and weakness for days.
I’m not sure what kind of food safety regulations are in effect on Loomworld, but if they’re anything like what we have here on Earth-1218, then her potential plight seems even more likely-
Our findings provided some cause for concern. In 16 percent of cooked, ready-to-eat shrimp, we found several bacteria, including vibrio and E. coli. Those bacteria can potentially cause illnesses such as food poisoning—which could include diarrhea and dehydration—and, in rare instances, can even prove fatal. In 11 samples of raw imported farmed shrimp, we detected antibiotics. And in seven raw shrimp samples (six farmed and one wild), we found MRSA—methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria that can cause infections that are often difficult to treat.
I’m not sure what to make of Morlun’s boast that he procured the shrimp from the “deepest trenches”? Culinary shrimp, when wild caught, is usually found close to shore.
Shrimping is typically done in coastal areas, estuaries, and tidal creeks using various methods such as cast netting, trapping, or even hand-picking in shallow waters.
Shrimp tend to congregate in areas with marshes, seagrass beds, and sandy or muddy bottoms.
